SARS has announced that the tax filing season will begin on 7 July and run until 20 October 2025 for non-provisional taxpayers, and until 19 January 2026 for provisional taxpayers.
Here’s what you need to know to find out if you are required to submit your tax return.
You need to file if:
• You earned income from multiple employers or had additional income sources.
• You earned Income above R500,000 in the current tax period
• You have received taxable benefits or allowances, such as travel allowance
• You earned income from outside South Africa.
• You are a provisional taxpayer
• You received a SARS auto-assessment, but you do not agree to it
You do not need to file if:
• You worked for a single employer, and your total income for the year was under R500,000, and tax (PAYE) was deducted.
• You have no other income sources.
• You earned interest that is below the threshold (R23800 if you’re 65 or younger and R34 500 if you’re older than 65)
• You earned income from tax-free investments only.
• You received a lump sum retirement benefit that is already taxed.
Understanding these rules can save you time, money, and stress.
